When dealing with piping systems, fittings, valves, and instrumentation, one often-overlooked detail can lead to costly consequences: thread compatibility. The difference between BSPP, BSPT, NPT, and NPTF threads may seem minor—but in industrial applications where safety, pressure integrity, and leakage prevention matter, choosing the correct thread type is critical.
In this guide, we’ll explore the key differences between British and American thread types, explain the significance of tapered vs. parallel threads, and help you determine which standard best suits your fluid system.
BSP (British Standard Pipe) and NPT (National Pipe Thread) are the two most commonly used thread standards in the world.
BSP threads are commonly used across Europe, the UK, Asia, and Australia.
NPT threads dominate in North America and are governed by ANSI standards.
While both types use inches for sizing, they are not interchangeable. A slight variation in thread angle and form means misapplication can result in leaks, poor sealing, or component failure.
Thread Form: Tapered (threads narrow toward the end)
Flank Angle: 55 degrees
Standard: ISO 7-1
Sealing Mechanism: Thread interference; usually requires PTFE tape or sealant
Use Case: Medium to high-pressure applications in oil & gas, chemical plants, and hydraulic systems
Thread Form: Parallel (same diameter along the length)
Flank Angle: 55 degrees
Standard: ISO 228
Sealing Mechanism: Needs bonded seal ring or O-ring with a flat-faced connection
Use Case: Lower-pressure applications, especially in hydraulics and pneumatics
Feature | BSPP | BSPT |
---|---|---|
Thread Type | Parallel | Tapered |
Seal Method | Bonded Seal / O-Ring | Thread Interference |
Reusability | High | Low |
Applications | Pneumatics, Hydraulics | High-pressure, industrial systems |
Note: A BSPT male can sometimes fit into a BSPP female, but sealing is not guaranteed unless specifically designed for it.
Thread Form: Tapered
Flank Angle: 60 degrees
Standard: ANSI B1.20.1
Sealing Mechanism: Thread interference with sealant (e.g., Teflon tape)
Use Case: Common in plumbing, instrumentation, and compressed gas systems
Thread Form: Tapered, like NPT
Flank Angle: 60 degrees
Standard: ANSI B1.20.3
Sealing Mechanism: Interference fit with thread crest-to-root contact — no sealant needed
Use Case: High-pressure hydraulic and fuel systems
Feature | NPT | NPTF |
Thread Type | Tapered | Tapered |
Sealant Needed | Yes | No (Dryseal) |
Self-Sealing | Partial | Yes |
Common Use | General plumbing | Hydraulic/Fuel Systems |
Important: NPT and NPTF threads are dimensionally similar, but not identical. Do not mix them in critical applications.
In short: No. Despite surface similarities, they are not compatible due to differences in:
Flank angles (55° vs. 60°)
Thread pitch
Taper angle
Attempting to mix them may result in:
Incomplete sealing
Thread stripping
Pressure leaks or safety hazards
Region | Common Thread Types |
USA | NPT, NPTF |
UK / Europe | BSPP, BSPT |
Asia | BSP (commonly) |
Global OEMs | Use mixed standards — always verify |
Both BSP and NPT are inch-based thread systems, but their inch designations do not represent the actual diameter. For example, BSP 1" = ~33.25 mm OD due to historical standards based on pipe ID.
When selecting the correct thread type for your fittings, valves, or instrumentation:
Check the standard of the mating part (labelled BSPP, BSPT, NPT, or NPTF)
Determine the pressure rating and sealing needs (e.g., Dryseal vs sealant)
Match taper to taper or parallel to parallel
Use manufacturer specifications or consult with Valvenok if unsure
Pipe threads may seem like a small detail, but they are the foundation of fluid integrity in any system. Choosing the correct thread type saves time, prevents leaks, ensures safety, and maximizes operational life.
At Valvenok, we supply a wide variety of fittings and valves compatible with all global thread types - NPT, NPTF, BSPP, BSPT and we’re happy to assist with technical guidance for any project.
